Crash, Boom, Calm: Products to help pets with thunderstorm or fireworks fear
For humans, fireworks and thunderstorms can be entertaining. But for our pets the sights and sounds of these summer mainstays can be quite frightening.
Did you know that Pet Valu stocks products that can help your pet cope with the anxiety caused by fireworks and thunderstorms? Here are a few of the products we offer in store.
Pet Naturals of Vermont Calming supplements
The Calming formula by Pet Naturals of Vermont comes in both dog and cat varieties. This supplement helps pets cope with increased environmental stressors. You can use it daily, or just when you know your pet is going to be dealing with a stressful situation.
Nutri-Vet Pet–Ease Diffuser and chews
Nutri-Vet Pet Ease™ products also provide anxiety relief. If you have trouble convincing your cat to swallow a pill, Nurti-Vet offers a diffuser for cats that emits a calming scent. Made from essential oils, mood elevators and personality modulators, you can use it regularly to reduce bad behaviours like clawing furniture or inappropriate urination, or during a stressful time (like moving, or when a thunderstorm is in the forecast).
Because dogs are generally less picky about what they eat, Nutri-Vet also offers a smoke-flavoured Pet East Chew to help keep canines calm.
Natural Pet Stress Control
These liquid formulas are added to your pet’s water bowl, for fast relief of many stress related symptoms. Both dog and cat formulas are FDA registered with no known negative drug interactions or side effects.
Thundershirt
A supplement-free option is the Thundershirt. Thundershirts are basically specialized clothing that provide a gentle and constant pressure to your dog’s body, which has a calming effect on dogs (think of it as a reassuring hug they can wear).
So before the next long weekend or big storm, plan a trip to Pet Valu to discuss if any of these items are right for your pet.

Great post lot's of great products to help dogs deal with being afraid. I have a great article on my dog training blog that may be of help. Please feel free to come and have a look.
Our mini-Schnauzer,(well, not so mini)has severe anxiety in thunderstorms and with fireworks. We bought her a thundershirt which we put on when we anticipate a thunderstorm. It has stopped the frantic clawing, digging, hiding behind the washing machine, burrowing under the king size bed, the heavy panting. She is able to sleep in front of her crate which is her security blanket. No training required and it has helped enormously.
