Pack Up the Cats
My cats, Sam, Wasabi and Cali, treat any adventure in the car as a harrowing brush with death. With all three of them in the car, all you can hear is an endless course of pathetic, soul-crushing meows, moans and cries. They are very much indoor cats, and while they do try to get outside occasionally, they usually regret it within seconds, when they realize that the world is big, and they are rather small.
So when we moved from our old house to our new house, the cats did not take it well. Despite the usual cat love for boxes, they seemed to know on an instinctual level that the new cardboard jungle throughout the house was not a network of cat apartments, but, in fact, a terrifying change to their comfortable little lives.
On moving day, the cats sensed something was up. We’d moved all the boxes to a room and were frantically running around with last minute tasks. The cats could our anxiety, which made them suspicious. Finally, they were herded into their carriers and loaded into the car. It was only a short drive to the new house, but the cats made it feel agonizingly long with their woeful complaining.
To try to help the cats adapt to their new setting, I set them up a safe area in the laundry room. There they would have a litter box and water, plus several places to hide. After the traumatizing time in the car, the cats were happy to be out of the carriers. But that didn’t mean they were happy with their new surroundings. I was glad I chose the laundry room with all its crevices and sheltered areas, because the cats’ first instinct was to hide. At one point all three of them were wedged in behind the water heater (you can see Wasabi hiding there in the photo to the right).
They stayed in their safe room as the moving truck was unloaded. This was best as it kept them from being alarmed by people coming and going, kept them out from underfoot, and ensured they didn’t escape.
Once we had arranged most of the furniture and felt settled in, we started to let the cats out to explore. We left the litter box in the safe room so that they’d know where it was. Slowly, they made their ways upstairs and found their familiar furniture (and their familiar humans) and started to look a little less scared. Over the next few days, we noticed that they continued to be skittish. Noises from the street outside, or even indoor noises like paper falling off a table, would send them in to panic-and-dash mode. It took about two weeks before they started to get used to the loud noises and didn’t run back to their safe room at any sign of danger.
The one surefire way to get the cats out of their safe room or any other hiding spot in the house was to shake the food jar. Amazingly, that helped them conquer all their fears, and would keep them calmed down for at least a couple of hours.
I learned a few things during this move. First, my cats are all wimps (just kidding, I’m sure panic-and-dash is the appropriate reaction to unknown noises in a new space). Second, I hadn’t before seen the importance of the cats having a safe room. We kept water in the room for the first two weeks so that they could hide in there for long periods of time without needing to come out. Third, food is a big motivator in adjusting to new territory. As long as everyone gets fed, everyone is happy.
